The long-empty riverside unit in Friars Walk will open as Hafod on 4 September. The operators, who already run a stall in Newport Market, say the menu is Welsh grain, fish from the Severn, and a pudding list that changes daily. Lunch from 11.30–3; supper Thursday to Saturday.

They are not taking bookings for the first two weeks. The unit had sat empty since a national chain left in 2024. The council’s city-centre team called it “the kind of independent the original scheme was meant to hold”.
