Thirteen car clubs, 500 members: Wales's sharing scheme spreads

Thirteen car clubs now run across Wales under the TrydaNi scheme, backed by 1 million pounds of Welsh Government money, and between them more than 500 people have joined. Members pay 2 pounds an hour, capped at 30 pounds, plus 16p a mile, to borrow an electric car instead of owning one.

Aberystwyth shows what the model looks like at full tilt: 99 members sharing two electric vehicles since December 2024. Clubs run in Swansea, Penygroes and Abergavenny, with Bangor launching soon. Mark Hooper, the Deputy Minister for Transport, called the clubs an easy and affordable way for people to share use of a car without the cost of owning one.
